UTTER INN

The Tiny Underwater Cabin Floating on a Swedish Lake

VÄSTERÅS, SWEDEN

Located on Lake Mälaren near the city of Västerås, Utter Inn is one of the smallest and most unusual underwater hotels in the world.

At first glance, the structure looks like a simple small red Swedish cabin floating on the lake. But hidden beneath the waterline is a fully submerged bedroom where guests can sleep surrounded by fish.

The hotel is actually an art project created by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg and remains one of the few places in Europe where travelers can spend the night underwater.

Guests reach the cabin by boat and stay alone in the middle of the lake — making the experience feel like having a private floating island.

Sleeping Beneath the Lake

The highlight of the Utter Inn is its underwater bedroom located about 3 meters (10 feet) below the lake’s surface.

Large panoramic windows face in all directions, allowing guests to watch fish swimming through the lake while relaxing in bed.

The room is simple but cozy, featuring:

• twin beds facing the underwater windows
• soft lighting and minimal furnishings
• peaceful views of the lake’s underwater world

Because the structure sits directly in the natural lake environment, the fish often swim right past the glass throughout the day.

Above the waterline, the Utter Inn looks like a traditional Swedish red cottage placed on a floating platform.

The upper level includes a small deck where guests can relax, sunbathe, or enjoy the quiet lake views.

Visitors can also:

• swim in the lake
• paddle a small inflatable canoe
• watch the sunset over the water

Because the cabin is located about 1 kilometer from shore, the atmosphere feels incredibly peaceful and secluded.

A Unique Art Project Turned Hotel

Utter Inn was originally created as an artistic installation exploring unusual places people could live.

The structure contains two main sections:

A small floating house above water
A submerged bedroom below the lake surface

Guests climb down a ladder through the floating cabin to reach the underwater room.

The design allows visitors to experience life both above and below the water at the same time.

Pricing and Availability

Utter Inn is surprisingly affordable compared to most underwater hotels.

Typical nightly rates start around $140–$360 per night, depending on the package and season.

The hotel is usually open from spring through early autumn, when the lake conditions are calm enough for overnight stays.

Because there is only one room available, it is often booked well in advance by travelers looking for a unique bucket-list experience.

Sleeping here offers a rare chance to spend the night beneath the water in the quiet middle of a Swedish lake.
